SUMMARY
The Lead Accounting Clerk is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and workflow of the accounting support staff within the assigned department. This role provides guidance and support to less-senior clerical staff, ensures the accuracy and timeliness of financial processes, and serves as the acting supervisor in their absence. The individual in this position plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of financial data, supporting process improvements, and executing special projects with a high level of independence and judgment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of accounting clerks, ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of routine accounting tasks such as data entry, account reconciliation, and transaction processing.
- Verify the work of less-senior clerical staff to ensure compliance with departmental standards and accounting principles.
- Act as the point of contact and decision-maker in the absence of the department supervisor, maintaining continuity of operations.
- Perform detailed account analyses, reconciliations, and reviews for various functions assigned to the department, such as accounts payable, receivable, or general ledger support.
- Independently manage and execute assigned special projects, using analytical skills and financial knowledge to make informed decisions and provide actionable insights.
- Support the preparation of departmental payroll and assist in the development of payroll budgets, subject to review and final approval by the supervisor.
- Prepare, review, and submit period-end journal entries to ensure the accuracy of the general ledger and financial statements.
- Collaborate with other departments to resolve accounting discrepancies and improve workflow processes.
- Maintain thorough documentation of all activities and ensure adherence to internal controls, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Support training and onboarding of new staff, providing mentorship and fostering a collaborative team environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Consistently satisfactory performance reviews and a demonstrated ability to meet or exceed expectations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey financial concepts clearly and professionally.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and accountability in all work performed.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate degree in Accounting or a related field (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a relevant accounting or bookkeeping role, with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or lead role is strongly preferred.
